Well, the show is off to an interesting start.
We start off with a brief introduction of the boys, and… wow. Mystery is not understating matters when he quips that “we’ve got our work cut out for us.” We’ve got the tall, skinny nerd, the geek, the fat slob, the 45 year old virgin, the quiet asian — just a huge collection of never-gets-laid stereotypes.
Next, Mystery sends the guys into a club to see what they can do on their own, without any help. This segment actually surprised me quite a bit. The young Cuban guy was the only one who failed to talk to a single girl, instead grabbing a beer and hugging the wall. His performance was what I expected from all of them, and yet all of them except the Cuban were able to at least make contact with a woman. That’s a really good sign for the other guys. Why?
Because initiating the conversation is half the battle.
At any rate, the episode ends with Mystery, along with wingmen Matador and JDog, heading into the club to show the boys how it’s done. No one gives much commentary about what is happening or why it’s working, so I’ll point out one thing. Notice the first shot of Mystery entering the club. Look at the way he carries himself in there. He rolls in like he knows he’s the shit. And consequently, everyone else in the room thinks he’s the shit, too.
I’ll talk more about my theories about projecting self-worth in a later post, but that one shot is a great demonstration of the concept.
